Pope

Why is the pope still on display? He wasn't even embalmed! Its been days since he died and its still open casket. Does anybody have any idea why the Vatican would choose not to embalm him?

The reason for this is because of the religious/traditional practice of determining whether or not a person can be declared a Saint or not...
The idea is that if the Pope (or anybody else for that matter) is buried with his organs intact, dug up after about five years, and his body is still intact and has not decayed; this is considered a miracle and thus he can then be declared a Saint.
In other words, you can't be declared a Saint unless you've performed a certain amount of miracles or been dead for a while and your body has not decayed.
This is a Catholic tradition only, if I'm not mistaken.
Hope this helps;)
