No, this is not something from a comic book. Huge pieces of the ancient landmark have been stolen to be used to pave roads. It is less expensive to be fined in China for stealing from the Great Wall than it is to buy proper road pavement.

I want a Great Wall road in my town! Those stones would make a cool drive way.
Yes, losing a great landmark is lamentable. However, change happens and landmarks are torn down. Tearing down is part of the human process. Besides, if the Chinesse refuse to give it more importance, should we?
Very good point feet. However, these people did break the law in the process, and should recieve due punishement.
The Wall is a part of history, a reminder that even the largest walls won't keep stuff out.
