Ah, finally someone got smart. Why we search 73 year olds and take the GI Joe gun away from an 8 year old is beyond me. This is how it should be done in the US.

So the media blows things out of proportion, suprise suprise.
Maybe the rest of us should take a lesson from this. Try to look beyond the headlines, and at the bright side of a story.

Bomber given 14-22 years, judge comments on Bush

"The sentence itself was fairly straightforward: An Algerian man received 22 years for plotting to bomb the Los Angeles airport on the eve of the millennium."
Ok, that's very good.
"U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour said the successful prosecution of Ahmed Ressam should serve not only as a warning to terrorists, but as a statement to the Bush administration about its terrorism-fighting tactics.
"We did not need to use a secret military tribunal, detain the defendant indefinitely as an enemy combatant or deny the defendant the right to counsel," he said Wednesday. "The message to the world from today's sentencing is that our courts have not abandoned our commitment to the ideals that set our nation apart.""
Ok, so the courts are great at dealing with terrorism. It took FIVE AND A HALF YEARS to convict this guy. In the 4 years since 9/11, what has the military done? Eliminated 75% of Omsama Bin Ladin's terror empire, removed the Taliban from power, and removed Saddam Hussein, taking the fight right back to the terrorists. And this judge thinks that the courts can be just as efficient as our Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force?
Then the worst news of this case:
"Ressam did not speak in court, but provided a short written statement in which he thanked the judge, renounced violence of any kind and apologized for his actions, Hillier said.
With credit for time served and three years off for good behavior, Ressam could be out of prison in 14 years. "

Hillary to support Roberts

This is interesting. Hilary Clinton intends to throw her support behind Justice John Roberts for the supreme court nomination.
This is actually a good Political move, she is either separating herself from the Kooks in her party, or will be seen as a leader in getting things moving in the senate. As long as the spineless republicans in the senate don't feel obligated to pay her back, this should be a good thing.

Poll: Illegal Immigration Seen as Serious Problem

"The poll finds 91 percent think the illegal or undocumented immigration situation in the United States today is a "very" serious (63 percent) or "somewhat" serious (28 percent) problem. Only 5 percent think the problem is "not very" serious and 2 percent "not at all" serious."
Thats a pretty big number, nearly unanimous. Any politician worth his salt would realise this issue could win him a huge number of votes, but they are either afraid of being slammed with racisim outcrys, or just are being ignorant.

GM's June auto sales hit 19-year high

Whee! Finally some good news for a US auto maker. Chyrstler also had a 1.1% increase, but Ford had a 3% decline in sales, although that may be attributed to GM taking some of it's truck sales, with the Dallas Morning News reporting "the advance was fueled by record truck sales", which is interesting in light of the hysteria over gas prices and people flocking to cars and hybrids in droves to get more MPG.

This is pretty big, but not near as big as the fit the democrats will throw when Bush's Nomination needs to clear the senate.
Might last till the end of his term.
On other court related news, I heard a story about a developer wanting to build a hotel over one of the Supream court justices house. I'll find the story soon.

I noticed this a little while ago, just hadn't gotten around to posting it.
The supreme court is nuts! Nowhere in the constitution does it provide for the taking of property for the use of another private citizen. We are now one step closer facism.
Sandra Day O'Conor wrote an excellent dissent, one that should be taught in schools for years to come.
The Head west, Turn Right blog has an excellent post on this subject, found here.
On another note, the court also ruled that the 10 comandments should not be inside courtrooms, but are legal on government property. I think they found it legal in some instances becasuse they are posting on the Supream Court grounds.

Flag burning ammendment

I really don't know what to think of this. At first glance it's a great idea, but it is also restricting free speech rights. The constitution and the bill of rights are in place to protect our rights, not restrict them. However, the flag is more the a symbol of our nation, it represents the Military abroad and the Liberty they are fighting for.
This would still have to pass the states, and if it came to party lines then the Red states would clobber the blue states, and the ammendment would pass.

The survey also found that just 14% agree with people who say that prisoner treatment at Guantanomo Bay is similar to Nazi tactics. Sixty-nine percent disagree with that comparison. This helps explain why Illinois Senator Dick Durbin apologized for making such a comparison."

When you read some of the graphic descriptions of what has occurred here [at Guantanamo Bay]--I almost hesitate to put them in the [Congressional] Record, and yet they have to be added to this debate. Let me read to you what one FBI agent saw. And I quote from his report:
On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food or water. Most times they urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18-24 hours or more. On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. . . . On another occasion, the [air conditioner] had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the tile floor.
If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others--that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."
Several points Durbin forgot to mention:
This was an ununiformed enemy combatant, fighting a war while hiding behind civies.
These are the same group of people that flew our plans into our buildings, killing 3000 US Citizens.
These are the terrorists, in league with the same people that capture and slowly beheaded Nick Byrd; and other US contractors in Iraq. Being chained to a floor with the air conditioner on doesn't sound like torture.
The Treatment of the prisoners:

There is something seriously wrong with the European Union. This infighting didn't just popup over night, it most definatly has been simmering under the surface, sweept under the rug. Now, you have Britan being able to laugh at all the EU countries becasue they didn't join with the Euro. France, Germany and Italy both are considering withdrawling, claiming it would be better for their economy to do so.

"Fox, a former Coca-Cola executive, angered the U.S. government and civil-rights leaders when he said in a speech 10 days ago that Mexican immigrants do jobs "that not even blacks want to do there in the United States."
So now Sharpton is demanding appologies.

Buchanan sees 'war' within conservatism

In an interview with the Washington Times, Pat Buchanan the conservative movement fracturing due to "phonnies" who act like conservatives to reach a level of power.
Sadly, a lot of what he says is right. When you look at the main base of conservatism, you see the the Republican Party. When you see the republican party, what do you see? A bunch of cowering moderates in the senate, a President who is excellent on forign policy(For a lot of people anyways), but weak on spending; who is strong on values in the campaigns, but fails to act strongly durring his term. What you see is a fractured party whose leadership is either not very conservative anymore, (Heck, Delay is the only strong conservative I can think of at the moment), or is no longer being followed due to a fracturing of it's base.

Interesting article about the new Star wars movie, Revenge of the Sith, having a lot of correlations with the political climate of today.
As a Star Wars nut, I hate to see this happen, but it does happen in a limited amount. For instance, in Labrynth of Evil (by James Luceno) Palpatine(The chancelor who becomes emperor) sends 200,000 troops to attack a "Triad of Evil". Yoda responds by essentially saying they are remote, insignificant, and don't threaten the republic.
Now that all appears to have a liberal view on US politics, were the bad guys are being warmongers, and the good guys are attempting to bring peace. However, in what I took as a reverse in direction, Palpatine requested that the constitution be changed, to allow him to remain in power. His reasoning for doing so is that the constitution is a "Living docutment".
Seems Lucasfilm/books is trying to take stabs on both sides of the isle.

Some ebayers are extremely gullible.
Today, I thought I'd post something of substance. But, since I won't be blogging tomorrow, I decided not to. Sorry to get your hopes up.
I ran across this auction while surfing through Ebay.
Its a picture of a piece of 10 day old chicken breast, supposedly resembling the recently deceased pope. Do you see it? I see a man, but sorry, I don't see any pope. What amazes me is not that a person would post an auction like this (some people will do anything for money), but that people are actually taking it seriously.
A person wrote the seller saying:
"Please advise me if this comes from a smoke free home. I am deeply religious but I do have allergies. Thank you."
No, I am not kidding. I copied that off of the auction website, which you can see, here.
So far, there are 49 bids and the "Pope" is going for around $3,000.
I repeat, some ebayers are extremely gullible. Still don't believe me? Check out this other auction for a doll. What's so weird about this doll? Its supposedly haunted.

I've been watching the China vs. Japan stand off over Japanese textbooks, and honestly, I think its retarded. Why? Allow me to explain:
China is upset because Japanese textbooks show Japanese history in a very self-righteous light, not acknowledging their aggression during WWII.
Now, I do know for a fact that the Japanese are not taught very much about their imperialism in the early 20th century. When I visited Japan, I asked my tourguide about the Japanese involvement in WWII and Pearl Harbor. He knew little of what I was talking about, other than the fact that Japan did take part in WWII and was bombed at Hiroshima. But, we can now ask, why is this such a big deal that Chinese protesters are willing to set themselves on fire outside of Japanese embassies? Such a heated argument between countries over something so trivial seems very "kindergartenish".
It all boils down to the animosity between communist China and capitalistic Japan. China does not allow protests (remember Tianamen?) unless it is about an issue that it agrees with. This is not about textbooks. I have a feeling that the Chinese gov. is using this as fuel to ignite more dislike in its people against "Westernized" (i.e. "capitalistic") Japan, and that this is very closely tied to the latest N. Korea/Chinese relations and nuke talks (or lack of them).
I've written a lot, and chances are, no one will reply. Yet I always feel a little more well rounded after posting something on foreign news. :-)

Fake News Scandal
The New York Times, which suffered through its own fake news scandal in the Jayson Blair case, thought it had caught the Bush administration in similar practices in a March 12 front-page story on the use of video news releases, or VNRs, by the federal government. It was headlined, "The Message Machine: How the Government Makes News; Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged News." Over 6,000 words were devoted to the matter.
It was an issue tailor-made for Senator Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, who had previously issued a statement declaring that the Bush administration's use of VNRs constituted illegal "covert propaganda." Clinton had declared, "It is critical to the credibility of an independent news media that covert government propaganda be rejected for use by news organizations." But it turns out that the Clinton administration had produced them as well.
The Clinton administration produced the same unlabeled prepackaged news segments, under the same department, on the same topic (prescription drug benefit), using the same "tactics" that the Bush administration was lambasted for. The Democrats had done the very same thing.

Re-opening of the debate
I'm very disappointed the entire narrative was deleted because I posed questions about bibical interpretation and was looking forward to getting answers. As somebody who is not a bibical scholar, I was curious how one supports their anti-gay belief with a literal reading of scripture--e.g., previously cited passages in Leviticus and Romans--but don't literally interpret other verses. For instance, in Romans, Paul suggests that homosexuality is bad, but he also says in Corinthians that women should absolutely be silent in church. Thus, a literal reading of Paul's words would not only say that homosexuality is bad, but women shouldn't sing nor pray in church.
I also mentioned that a passage in Exodus says people who work on the Sabbath should be put to death. Why does that ignored by Christians?
Obviously, I'm suggesting that people using the Bible to condemn homosexuality are--perhaps unknowingly--reading it in such a way to suit their purposes. The historical example is southerners using the Bible to support the institution of slavery in the nineteenth century.
Tell me why I'm wrong. And if I'm wrong, what bibical passages matter and which ones can be ignored? Why does the passage in Exodus get ignored but Paul's take on homosexuality in Romans is approved? And if Paul is correct about homosexuality, why is he wrong about women being silent in the church?

Please be civil, and argue within the arena of ideas, not shameless emotional appeals.

"Gay Desires to Serve Openly" deleted
Okay, I've officially deleted the "Gay desires to serve openly" section because of the unhealthy direction that it was traveling. If there cannot be a civilized debate ruled by reason and not by emotion or bashing of individual people, then what is the point of debating? Tearing down other people is not the way to win an argument, and I don't want this blog to become a "people bashing" kind of place.
I applaud those bloggers that kept cool heads, but their numbers were very few, on both sides of the issue.

49% don't want a women president
Story
I heard this on the radio last night, so I went out an found it. A poll asking about whether having a woman candidate would affect their vote, because of the gender.
It would certianly affect mine. Would a women president be able to send another mother's son off to war? Would she be able to have the respect of the congress? Because women in general are more succeptable to emotions, how would this affect social programs?

I saw this at another blog (thank you, www.worldmagblog.com) and thought it was very much worth posting. Since Terri Schiavo was starved, the next step has already come.
"An 81-year-old Georgia grandmother is clinging to life almost two weeks after her 36-year-old granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, disconnected her feeding tube. Mae Magouirk was not terminally ill, comatose or in a "vegetative state" when her granddaughter placed her in a hospice facility; she had only been hospitalized two weeks ago for non-life threatening aortic problems. "Grandmama is old and I think it is time she went home to Jesus," Gaddy told extended family members. "She has glaucoma and now this heart problem, and who would want to live with disabilities like these?" The removal of the feeding tube is in defiance of Magouirk's wishes, outlined in a living will, which stated that fluids and nourishment were to be withheld only if she were either comatose or "vegetative." She is neither, although heavily sedated with morphine and a tranquilizer."

So, on that light hearted note,
Google is releasing a beta version of their "drink" in a viral marketing campaign, much like gMail (for those of you to unfortunate to have this, send me an email). Aparently, the cap uses an RIFD tag to wirelessly send your genetic profile, (which it reads from your saliva as you drink), and then subtly alters your nuero-signals from your mouth to your brain.
Sounds interesting... Soda on major steroids.

Wendy's finger
I had heard about this* several days ago, and was rather surprised. I like Wendy's. Unfortunately, I don't think I could eat there (unless it was a vegetarian meal) until this lawsuit is figured out.
Even the idea of finding a finger in my food is nasty. Nasty. Nasty.
Yet there is evidence that Wendy's is innocent, because this woman who is charging them over the finger incident has begun several lawsuits in the last few years, including another one with a different fast food company. It sounds very suspicious to me..........

Al Gore has been working hard the last few months, and this is the result. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the new station, "Current" for the masses (younger ones anyways).
First of all: Al Gore to attract younger viewers?? I guess if this isn't spread around, it should work. The networks plan:

Second: WHAT IS GOOGLE THINKING??? I think I'm going to switch to MSN search. They got no love for the democrats, esspecially after they were sued for a bogus anti-trust lawsuit.

Sandy Berger
Sandy Berger should have stuck with his family name and flipped hamburger patties at Mickey D's. Instead he played jeopardy with U.S. level 'X' security documents.
What I keep wondering about are the documents that he supposedly shredded. Do we have any proof that he did not sell them? And if he did destroy them, then why? It does not seem wise to me, to close this case before knowing for sure what happened to those secret documents.
"In addition to removing the five documents and lying about his actions, Berger acknowledged that he destroyed three of them with scissors. His associates strained to explain the puzzle of why he destroyed three documents but preserved two others that were nearly identical.

the Pope
Its been all over the news--the Pope is dying. I'm not as worried/concerned/grieved as a Catholic would be, because I do not regard him as my father or as a father figure. To me, he is just a man. I do not understand why some would wish to elevate a fallen man as someone like God or as a mediator between God and man. That's Jesus place, and His place only.
However, as a human being and Christian, I can feel sad that he is dying. I respected this pope for his stand for life and how even during his health problems he still strongly advocated dignity for the dying and for life for all. One thought that is constantly going through my mind is what the Pope said a few months ago. He said that one of the reasons he has held on so tight during the health problems is that he loves life and he wants to continue supporting everyone's right to life. What a severe irony! that he may die the day after Terri Schiavo.

How many people have to die before the country stops humoring feminists? Last week, a defendant in a rape case, Brian Nichols, wrested a gun from a female deputy in an Atlanta courthouse and went on a murderous rampage. Liberals have proffered every possible explanation for this breakdown in security except the giant elephant in the room — who undoubtedly has an eating disorder and would appreciate a little support vis-a-vis her negative body image.
The New York Times said the problem was not enough government spending on courthouse security ("Budgets Can Affect Safety Inside Many Courthouses"). Yes, it was tax-cuts-for-the-rich that somehow enabled a 200-pound former linebacker to take a gun from a 5-foot-tall grandmother.
Atlanta court officials dispensed with any spending issues the next time Nichols entered the courtroom when he was escorted by 17 guards and two police helicopters. He looked like P. Diddy showing up for a casual dinner party.
I think I have an idea that would save money and lives: Have large men escort violent criminals. Admittedly, this approach would risk another wave of nausea and vomiting by female professors at Harvard. But there are also advantages to not pretending women are as strong as men, such as fewer dead people. Even a female math professor at Harvard should be able to run the numbers on this one.
Of course, it's suspiciously difficult to find any hard data about the performance of female cops. Not as hard as finding the study showing New Jersey state troopers aren't racist, but still pretty hard to find.
Mostly what you find on Lexis-Nexis are news stories quoting police chiefs who have been browbeaten into submission, all uttering the identical mantra after every public safety disaster involving a girl cop. It seems that female officers compensate for a lack of strength with "other" abilities, such as cooperation, empathy and intuition.
There are lots of passing references to "studies" of uncertain provenance, but which always sound uncannily like a press release from the Feminist Majority Foundation. (Or maybe it was The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, which recently released a study claiming that despite Memogate, "Fahrenheit 911," the Richard Clarke show and the jihad against the Swiftboat veterans, the press is being soft on Bush.)
The anonymous "studies" about female officers invariably demonstrate that women make excellent cops — even better cops than men! One such study cited an episode of "She's the Sheriff," starring Suzanne Somers.
A 1993 news article in the Los Angeles Times, for example, referred to a "study" –- cited by an ACLU attorney — allegedly proving that "female officers are more effective at making arrests without employing force because they are better at de-escalating confrontations with suspects." No, you can't see the study or have the name of the organization that performed it, and why would you ask?
There are roughly 118 million men in this country who would take exception to that notion. I wonder if women officers "de-escalate" by mentioning how much more money their last suspect made.
These aren't unascertainable facts, like Pinch Sulzberger's SAT scores. The U.S. Department of Justice regularly performs comprehensive surveys of state and local law enforcement agencies, collected in volumes called "Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics."
The inestimable economist John Lott Jr. has looked at the actual data. (And I'll give you the citation! John R. Lott Jr., "Does a Helping Hand Put Others at Risk? Affirmative Action, Police Departments and Crime," Economic Inquiry, April 1, 2000.)
It turns out that, far from "de-escalating force" through their superior listening skills, female law enforcement officers vastly are more likely to shoot civilians than their male counterparts. (Especially when perps won't reveal where they bought a particularly darling pair of shoes.)
Unable to use intermediate force, like a bop on the nose, female officers quickly go to fatal force. According to Lott's analysis, each 1 percent increase in the number of white female officers in a police force increases the number of shootings of civilians by 2.7 percent.
Adding males to a police force decreases the number of civilians accidentally shot by police. Adding black males decreases civilian shootings by police even more. By contrast, adding white female officers increases accidental shootings. (And for my Handgun Control Inc. readers: Private citizens are much less likely to accidentally shoot someone than are the police, presumably because they do not have to approach the suspect and make an arrest.)
In addition to accidentally shooting people, female law enforcement officers are also more likely to be assaulted than male officers — as the whole country saw in Atlanta last week. Lott says: "Increasing the number of female officers by 1 percentage point appears to increase the number of assaults on police by 15 percent to 19 percent."
In addition to the obvious explanations for why female cops are more likely to be assaulted and to accidentally shoot people — such as that our society encourages girls to play with dolls — there is also the fact that women are smaller and weaker than men.
In a study of public safety officers — not even the general population — female officers were found to have 32 percent to 56 percent less upper body strength and 18 percent to 45 percent less lower body strength than male officers — although their outfits were 43 percent more coordinated. (Here's the cite! Frank J. Landy, "Alternatives to Chronological Age in Determining Standards of Suitability for Public Safety Jobs," Technical Report, Vol. 1, Jan. 31, 1992.)
Another study I've devised involves asking a woman to open a jar of pickles.
There is also the telling fact that feminists demand that strength tests be watered down so that women can pass them. Feminists simultaneously demand that no one suggest women are not as strong as men and then turn around and demand that all the strength tests be changed. It's one thing to waste everyone's time by allowing women to try out for police and fire departments under the same tests given to men. It's quite another to demand that the tests be brawned-down so no one ever has to tell female Harvard professors that women aren't as strong as men.
Acknowledging reality wouldn't be all bad for women. For one thing, they won't have to confront violent felons on methamphetamine. So that's good. Also, while a sane world would not employ 5-foot-tall grandmothers as law enforcement officers, a sane world would also not give full body-cavity searches to 5-foot-tall grandmothers at airports. "

People arrested for trying to hydrate Schiavo
About a dozen people have been arrested for trying to hydrate Schiavo. Her parents say that she is fading quickly and could die any day.
Would you go as far as to try to sneak food and water to her?
It seems to me that this whole situation is pretty sick. One aspect that has hit me about it lately is that judges keep turning this down and have allowed her feeding tube to be removed, when it seems a majority of the American people don't want her to die.

Is this very different from Terri Schaivo's case?

Yesterday Ms Jepson said: "While I'm disappointed about the CPS's decision to drop the case, I am pleased the case has raised the issue of late-term abortion and the plight of disabled babies in late-term pregnancy. It has exposed grave discrimination and I will be seeking legal advice."
Is this really any different from the Schaivo case? Look at the similarities: both the baby and Mrs. Schaivo are helpless to defend themselves; the baby was exterminated because of a handicap (that can be mended through surgery!) and Mrs. Schaivo's life is threatened because of a handicap (and there is some hope for rehab!).

Idiocy never pays
QUINCY, Mass. - It's never good to fall asleep on the job, but when you're a robber the consequences can be severe. Police arrived at a CVS pharmacy early Tuesday morning to find Steven Jakaitis, 42, sleeping in his idling car with a nylon stocking over his head and a cap pistol in his pocket.
By his side was a note that read: "I have a Gun DO NOT Press any Alarms or let Custermors (sic) know Empty the All the register."
A customer called police after seeing Jakaitis, who was also wearing a black wig and a scarf. On the back seat of his car, officers found a plastic bag containing 36 unused hypodermic needles. He spoke incoherently after the officers woke him, Capt. Anthony DiBona said.
He never actually went into the store, police said.
At his arraignment Tuesday, Jakaitis pleaded innocent to attempted armed robbery, possession of a hypodermic syringe and receiving a stolen car. He was ordered held on $1,000 bail and ordered to appear for a pretrial conference on April 12.

I think that offering the money is a bad idea. The first thought that popped into my mind was "selling a life" or slavery. The more I thought about it, it seemed like it was placing a dollar amount on a life, which should not be done. Overall a bad idea, but I am open for convincing.
