Border fence, round 2.

Story: "Mexico pleaded with President Bush on Monday to veto a Senate proposal to build a fence to keep illegal immigrants out, saying it could backfire by making the border less secure.
The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly backed a bill on Friday to put up about 700 miles of fence, a project Republicans hope will impress voters calling for tougher immigration control ahead of November 7 congressional elections.
"The Mexican government strongly opposes the building of walls in the border area between Mexico and the United States," President Vicente Fox's spokesman Ruben Aguilar told reporters.
"This decision hurts bilateral relations, goes against the spirit of cooperation needed to guarantee security on the common border, creates a climate of tension in border communities," he said.

...
Mexicans are livid about the fence plan, which is seen as a slap in the face to efforts during Fox's near-completed six-year term to come to an agreement with Washington on immigration.
President-elect Felipe Calderon, who takes office December 1, also has lambasted the fence plan

..."

Hardly suprising Mexico doesn't like the fence. After 20 years of freely, and illiegally, crossing the southren border, the US is finally doing something to stop this trespassing. I'm sure Bush will sign this bill into law.
Why does mexico like the open border? Illigals work in the US, earn money, and send it back to mexico. The influx of capital helps their economy, while keeping many citizens who would otherwise be turning to domestic crime in the US.

Yeah, Mexicans officials don't want the fence cuz they can't improve their economy as many officials are corrupt. They don't pay their police and border patrols enough that these people have to take bribes to take care of their families. Building up a fence will force them to think of real ways to improve their economy or lose the next election. The problem w/ Mexico is not our fence, it's within their govt.

I seriously doubt the fence will stop anyone.
