I read an article about this a while back in Popular Science. THe reporter asked to be shot in the back at 500 meters. They agree, and shot him. After 2 seconds, he felt like his skin was on fire, so he stepped away from it. When show his back in a mirror, all that existed was a little redness. The idea behind it is that the microwaves heat the water underneath the skin, rather then burning the skin itself.
