Pelosi: Partisan, Pansy, and Prepared

Story: "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that President Bush lacks the authority to invade Iran without specific approval from Congress, a fresh challenge to the commander in chief on the eve of a symbolic vote critical of his troop buildup in Iraq.
Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that Bush consistently said he supports a diplomatic resolution to differences with Iran "and I take him at his word."
At the same time, she said, "I do believe that Congress should assert itself, though, and make it very clear that there is no previous authority for the president, any president, to go into Iran
.""

Yeah, that's one heck of a way to convince Iran to disarm, essentially handicap the President and his foreign policy. Technically, I do not think the President needs congresses' approval to defend this country, and we've got enough troops over there to take down the entire region, if our hands were untied.
Still, it is yet another vibrant display of Liberal weakness, fighting the war on terror along partisan lines, and refusing to defend this nation, or her soldiers. We have evidence, heck, even the New York Times acknowledges Iran is busy making weapons to kill our soldiers. And the democrat response? Bush, you can't do anything, we of the congress shall run this war.
This is beginning to be run by Vietnam, with a persistent engagement of the military by the political powers, and the result is not good.
Buzz off liberals, and let the military fight this war, and let Bush do what he feels needs to be done to defend this nation from the Muslim Nazis.

I am with you in spirit on this one, however there is one thing that's always bugged me no matter what party is in power. The Constitution does give Congress the sole power to declare war, while the president is given the role of commander in chief. There has not been a formal declaration of war since World War II. Korea, Vietnam, Gulf Wars 1 and 2, Bosnia, and Iraq were all undeclared wars and/or police actions. Debate has raged about why, and whether "declarations of war" are even feasible today.

Given the feckless nature of our Congress these days, I suppose it's best that they be kept out of it. However, I would love it if we'd get back to actually following our Constitution.

Anon, that is a legitimate concern.

Sola, We have not had the event to declare war by congress in 70 years because we have not been attacked by an individual nation state since Pearl Harbor. Rather, we have been subject to numerous terrorist attacks, and been fighting a shadow war against communism. Neither of those call for congressional declarations of war.

I would have a very hard time trusting congress with the handling of our military, they seem to have very little spine regarding anything involving defeating evil.
